Today's theme · Measurement arrived, influence did not

Ad money buys the slot, not the answer

Two studies and one quiet Google rollout landed on the same conclusion: the paid layer of AI search and the answer above it are running on separate machinery.

SE Ranking published a study yesterday covering more than 50,000 commercial prompts. It found ChatGPT serving a sponsored placement on 25.94% of them, which is roughly what you would guess. The number worth your morning is a much smaller one: 3.63%.

That is how often the advertiser paying for the slot also turned up as a cited source in the answer printed directly above it. At the exact advertised URL, the figure was 0.09%.

Google shipped something on the same day that lets you check your own side of the ledger. The generative AI performance report in Search Console appears to have gone live for every property, showing how often your pages surface inside AI answers. It withholds clicks and queries.

The week's pattern is that the instruments improved and the levers did not. You can now see whether the machines are showing you, and you can pay to appear beside what they say. Neither of those buys you a place inside the answer.

01 The market data

One assistant no longer means most people

ChatGPT’s share of generative AI web traffic fell from about 76% to roughly 53% in twelve months.

Similarweb’s 2026 Generative AI Landscape report, published July 29, tracks worldwide web visits across generative AI platforms. ChatGPT’s share fell from about 76% in June 2025 to roughly 53% by May 2026. Gemini climbed from under 9% to around 27% and Claude went from barely 2% to close to 9%.

ChatGPT is not shrinking. Its absolute visit count stayed roughly flat while the category around it grew: average monthly visits across all these platforms rose 70% year on year to 9.5 billion. The leader looks smaller because the room got bigger.

The number that matters most to a professional firm sits further down the same report. Similarweb measured how often a ChatGPT answer carries any citation, and the rate for Professional Services is under 4%, against roughly 23% in Travel and 20% in Automotive. Categories built on checkable options get sourced. Categories built on advice mostly do not.

Read that second way before you despair at it. A thin citation rate in your category means the competitive field for being the cited source is also thin, which is a different problem from being crowded out.

What to do about it

Ask the same three questions a prospective client would ask, word for word, in ChatGPT, in Gemini and in Claude. Write down which firms come back in each. If you only test one assistant you are testing roughly half the audience, and probably not the half that is growing.

02 The research

The ad and the answer are strangers

Advertisers appeared as a source in the response directly above their own ad 3.63% of the time.

SE Ranking analyzed more than 50,000 commercial prompts across 20 niches to establish how often ChatGPT serves ads and whether those ads match what was asked. Sponsored placements turned up on 25.94% of commercial prompts, close to the 29.45% the same firm measured inside Google’s AI Mode across 50,032 keywords collected on June 30.

The finding worth carrying into a budget meeting is about separation. Only 3.63% of advertisers were also cited as a source in the answer above their ad. The exact advertised URL appeared in citations 0.09% of the time, and advertiser brands were mentioned in 4.44% of responses.

SE Ranking’s earlier AI Mode work controlled for the obvious objection that advertisers are simply weaker sites. It compared them against non-advertising domains matched on domain trust, backlinks and organic standing, and advertisers were cited no more often. The ad is a booth at the door. The answer is the conversation inside, and the two have different doormen.

Relevance is the second problem. 14.35% of ChatGPT ads were unrelated to the prompt they sat beside under SE Ranking’s semantic analysis, ranging from 2.6% in Pets to more than half in Relationships and in News & Politics. Both figures are single snapshots of a system that is changing monthly, and SE Ranking says so plainly.

What to do about it

If you are testing paid placement inside an assistant, budget it as awareness and measure it as awareness. The evidence says it will not lift you into the answers, so keep the citation work on a separate track and a separate line.

That track is documentary. Which pages a machine quotes is decided by what is verifiable about you elsewhere, not by what you spent this quarter.

03 The platform shift

The booking now happens inside the chat

Yelp moved reservations into ChatGPT, so discovery and the transaction stop being two separate steps.

Yelp announced yesterday that ChatGPT users can book a table or join a waitlist at thousands of restaurants across the US and Canada without leaving the conversation. Changes to the booking are handled afterwards through Yelp.

Restaurants are the pilot, not the point. Yelp says its content and task-completion features now run inside ChatGPT, Apple Maps, Alexa+, Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo and Yahoo, and that service businesses can already take quote requests through the same plumbing.

The consumer research Yelp cites alongside the launch is the more useful part for a firm that sells expertise. In a Morning Consult survey of 2,202 US adults run February 26 to 28 with a margin of error near two points, 65% had used AI search in the previous six months and only 15% said they trust it “a lot.” 72% said AI platforms should always show where information comes from.

Note the obvious interest here: Yelp benefits commercially from a world in which assistants cite review platforms and hand off bookings. The methodology is disclosed and the sample is real, so the numbers stand. Read the framing around them with that in mind.

What to do about it

Establish whether a machine could hand you an appointment today. If booking a consultation requires a phone call during office hours and a form somebody has to read and reply to, an assistant cannot complete the task even when it recommends you.

04 The measurement

Google will show impressions, not clicks

The generative AI performance report now appears on every Search Console property.

Barry Schwartz reported this morning that the generative AI performance report in Google Search Console now appears to be live for everyone. Google has not announced a full rollout and its own help page still carries the note that the report is going to a subset of site owners, so treat availability as arriving rather than announced.

What it gives you: impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, grouped by pages, countries, devices and dates, from hourly to monthly. What it withholds: clicks and query data. It sits as an expandable tab under the main performance report.

An impressions-only report is a meter on the door that counts arrivals and never records who came in. It still answers a question that had no answer eight months ago, which is whether Google’s AI features are putting your pages in front of anyone, and which pages those are.

One documented trap before you go looking. If your site has been excluded from Search generative AI features, or has too few impressions, the report will show nothing, and an empty report reads exactly like an absent one.

What to do about it

Open Search Console and expand the tab under the main performance report. Write down two things: total AI impressions for the last three months, and the five pages carrying the most.

Treat that as a baseline, not a verdict. An impression counts when a link to your site is shown in an AI feature, which is not the same as a person reading your name.

05 The deadline

Six days to opt out of automatic matching

OpenAI switches Automatic Advanced Matching on for existing ChatGPT Ads pixels on August 17.

OpenAI told advertisers that Automatic Advanced Matching is already the default for new web pixels, and that on August 17, 2026 it will enable the same setting on existing web pixels. Opting out before that date is done in Ads Manager under Tools, then Conversions, then Data Source, then Edit pixel.

What the setting does: it matches more conversions to ads using hashed customer information taken from forms on your website. Hashing means the raw address is not transmitted, but the mechanism still derives a value from what your form collected and sends it to an advertising platform.

For a law firm that is a privacy question wearing a performance question’s clothes. A contact form on a legal website routinely collects both the identity of a person and the outline of their legal problem. Whoever owns your privacy policy should look at this before the 17th, alongside your state bar’s advertising rules, which apply to this channel exactly as they apply to the old ones.

The rest of the same release, for context: conversion-optimized cost-per-click campaigns in beta for product feed campaigns, dynamic URL macros for attribution, a multi-product carousel format now live, and ChatGPT Ads launching in Brazil and Mexico.

Do this before August 17

Answer two questions this week. What does your website form actually collect, and has anyone with privacy responsibility reviewed what now leaves the page?

If you cannot answer both by Friday, opt out and revisit it deliberately. A default that arrives on a date somebody else chose is not a decision you made.

If you do one thing this week

Open Search Console and read the new report. Whatever number sits there is your first honest measurement of how often Google’s AI features put your pages in front of a person, and you could not have had it in January.

The five stories describe a week when the instruments got better and the controls did not. Ads reached a quarter of commercial prompts without buying their advertisers a mention, Google shipped impressions while keeping the clicks, Yelp made a booking possible inside an answer, and the audience outside ChatGPT passed a third of the market.

Being cited still comes from what is documented about you somewhere a machine can check. That is slower than buying a placement, and far harder for a competitor to copy by Friday.
