Today’s theme · The steps before your website

Everything now happens before they reach your site

Google will now take the appointment itself, Apple started selling the map pin, and a new index says hundreds of brands with excellent search authority still never surface in an AI answer. Three of the first four steps a customer takes have moved onto somebody else’s property.

Start with the change that removes a step. Google raised the number of booking partners that can complete an appointment directly from a Local Services Ad from about twenty to more than five hundred, and switched it on automatically for advertisers whose Business Profile already had a booking link.

Apple picked the same week to turn on advertising inside Maps across the United States and Canada. There is a sign-up date attached to the introductory credit, which makes it the one item here with a deadline.

The research slot is less comfortable. An index built from 4,320 model responses found a group of brands with high domain ratings and heavy organic traffic that the models almost never mention. Search authority bought them less than they assumed.

Two smaller items round it out: Google confirmed it is routing result clicks through a passthrough URL that third-party trackers cannot decode, and Google Cloud shipped a legal edition of Gemini Enterprise with four large firms named at launch.

01 The platform change

Google now takes the appointment itself

The booking that used to happen on your website can now finish inside the ad.

Ginny Marvin, Google’s Ads Liaison, said on August 26 that the company is expanding Local Services Ads booking from about 20 Reserve with Google partners to more than 500. Search Engine Roundtable put that at roughly a 2,400% increase in the number of scheduling systems that can complete a booking without the customer leaving Google.

The part that matters operationally is that nobody has to opt in. Advertisers whose Google Business Profile already carries an active partner booking link will have that capability switched on for their Local Services Ads automatically, with no manual linking. If your firm uses a common intake or scheduling tool, this may already be live.

Google also said those settings carry over as Local Services accounts move into Google Ads over the coming months. That migration was already scheduled; this quietly makes booking part of what migrates with it.

Think of the ad as a reception desk that Google now staffs. The appointment still lands in your calendar, but the moment of commitment happens on a screen you do not design, measure or control, and the site visit that used to precede the booking may simply never happen.

What to do about it

Open your Business Profile and find out whether a booking link is attached, and to which partner. If one is there, assume customers are now booking through it from your Local Services Ads and check that the availability and the intake questions on that partner’s side are the ones you would want a prospective client to see.

If the answer is that nobody at the firm knows which system is connected, that is the week’s task. State bar rules on advertising and client communication apply to an intake flow you outsourced exactly as they do to one you built.

02 The research

Search authority bought less than these brands expected

An index of 4,320 model answers found 471 strong-SEO brands that the models barely mention.

Fractl published an AI visibility index on August 18 with its method stated in full. Eight industries, three models (GPT-4o, Gemini 2.5 Flash and Claude Sonnet 4.6), the same 96 industry-specific prompts run 15 times per model, producing 4,320 responses and more than 8,500 unique brand references. Every brand named was then matched against Ahrefs figures for domain rating, organic traffic, referring domains and keyword volume.

The headline result is the boring one. More than nine in ten brands behaved as an SEO would predict: better traditional search authority went with better AI visibility. That is worth saying plainly, because a lot of this year’s commentary has argued the two are unrelated.

The interesting result is the residue. About 5% of the set, 471 brands, had high domain ratings, very high organic traffic and deep keyword portfolios and still drew almost no references from the models. Reporting on the index attributes the gap to how often other trusted sites discuss and compare a brand, rather than to what the brand publishes about itself.

Treat the size of that effect carefully. Fractl is an agency that sells work in this category, the prompts were general industry questions rather than legal ones, and a correlation between two measurements taken in one window is not a mechanism. What survives the caveats is narrower and still useful: a strong site is usually necessary and demonstrably not always sufficient.

What to do about it

Run your own version at small scale before buying anyone’s dashboard. Write down the ten questions a prospective client would actually ask, ask them of two assistants, and record which firms get named. Repeat it in a month.

If your firm is one of the strong-site-no-mentions cases, the fix the data points to is coverage you do not own: directories, association pages, local press, referral partners describing what you do in their own words.

03 The plumbing

Google put a turnstile in front of every result link

Result clicks now pass through a Google URL that third-party trackers cannot read.

Barry Schwartz reported on August 26 that Google is rolling out a google.com/goto passthrough URL on search result links, after testing it since July. A Google spokesperson confirmed the rollout to him, saying the company has “a long history of deploying technical measures against evolving forms of abuse.”

Derek Perkins of the rank-tracking firm Nozzle told him it is at “nearly a 100% rollout across several residential ip providers.” His technical objection is the one that matters to anyone buying reporting: the goto links cannot be decoded, so a tracker has to follow every redirect to learn where a result actually points, and a single results page carries hundreds of them.

The commercial context is unhidden. Google is suing SerpApi over scraping, and this makes scraping more expensive for everybody doing it, including the AI visibility tools that check whether your firm appears for a given query.

You will not see this in your own analytics. What you may see over the next few months is your rank tracker or AI visibility tool getting slower and quietly less complete, and the vendor explaining it as a data source issue.

What to do about it

Ask any vendor selling you ranking or AI visibility reporting how they collect the data and what happens to their coverage under the goto rollout. A vendor who cannot answer that in plain language is reselling someone else’s feed.

Keep at least one measurement you own outright. Google Search Console is first-party, it is free, and it does not depend on anybody scraping a results page.

04 The vertical move

Google shipped a legal edition of its enterprise AI

Four large firms are named at launch, and one phrase in the announcement deserves a second read.

Reuters reported that Google Cloud launched Gemini Enterprise for Legal on August 25, in preview, with Cleary Gottlieb, Freshfields, Weil, and Williams & Connolly named as launch firms. It ships with legal-specific agents and connectors into the document management, e-discovery and research systems firms already run, including Thomson Reuters, Harvey and Legora.

One line in the coverage is worth reading twice. Google describes agents that can handle specialized legal and administrative functions “without significant human oversight.” That is a vendor’s framing of an autonomy level, and it sits awkwardly next to bar guidance in more than thirty states that puts verification of any AI output on the lawyer, every time.

None of this is sold to a five-person firm this quarter. It still reaches you two ways: it raises what a corporate client assumes their outside counsel can do quickly, and it puts more well-edited legal explanation into the systems that answer your prospects’ questions.

The competitive shape is familiar from other verticals. The largest firms get the tooling first, the expectation of speed follows, and the pricing conversation catches up about a year later.

What to do about it

If you are already using AI anywhere in intake or marketing, write down the human review step and who performs it. Not as policy theatre: as the record you would hand a bar investigator.

Never publish AI-generated content about your practice without a named reviewer signing off. The phrase “without significant human oversight” belongs to a vendor’s product page, not to your compliance file.

05 The money

Apple started selling the map, and there is a date

Sponsored listings are live on iPhone across the US and Canada, with a sign-up deadline attached to the credit.

Apple Maps ads began appearing on iPhones across the United States and Canada in the last week of August, after Apple opened booking to businesses on August 14. Access is rolling out gradually and is expected to reach all iPhone users over the coming weeks.

There are two placements and they behave differently. One sits in Suggested Places before the customer has typed anything; the other sits at the top of the results after a search. Apple says it will show only one ad per set of search results, which makes the single slot more contested than a page of Google ads and, for now, cheaper to test.

The introductory offer is where the date lives. Businesses paying by credit card get a 15% monthly advertising credit toward the following month’s spend, up to $1,000 a month for the first year, if they sign up before October 11, 2026. After that the credit is gone and the auction is just an auction.

A new channel does not come with new rules; it inherits the old ones. State bar advertising requirements apply to a sponsored map listing exactly as they apply to a billboard, including comparative claims and any language a regulator would read as a promise of results.

Do this before the date

If your practice depends on people finding an office, the October 11 date is a real decision point rather than a marketing one. Price a small test now, at a budget you would be comfortable losing entirely, and treat the credit as the reason to run it this quarter rather than next.

Before anything goes live, run the ad copy and the linked landing page through the same compliance review you would use for any other advertisement. Route it through your own reviewer, not the platform’s approval queue.

If you do one thing this week

Find out who is booking your appointments. Open your Google Business Profile, look at the booking link, and follow it through as a stranger would. Google switched that path on inside Local Services Ads this week for anyone who already had a partner attached, and most firms have never seen what the customer sees.

Then put October 11 in the calendar with a number next to it. That is the last day to claim Apple’s introductory Maps credit, and deciding not to test is a fine answer as long as it is a decision rather than a date you missed.

The rest of this week is other people’s architecture. The booking, the click, the answer and now the map all run through products you do not own. The two items above are the ones where a morning of attention still changes the outcome.
