Today’s theme · Changes you did not request

The defaults moved and nobody asked you first

Google expanded its AI answers to full length without being asked, put booking buttons on ads nobody opted into, and changed the tag snippet that counts your conversions. The one study in today’s brief says the pages doing the talking about your field mostly belong to somebody else.

Four of the five items below changed on their own. Nobody clicked a button, nobody approved a rollout, and in three cases the notice came from someone else noticing first.

Start with the evidence, because it frames the rest. Ahrefs read 145 million United States search results and found that the discussion box Google shows on about one result page in nine is, in practice, three websites.

Then the surfaces. Google confirmed on Friday that it is now expanding AI Overviews into full AI Mode answers by default on some queries, which pushes the ordinary blue links further down than the old “Show more” button ever did. From Sunday, its spam penalties stop applying to searchers in Europe.

Two items carry work. New Google tag snippets no longer include the command a lot of older conversion setups were built around, and Reserve with Google booking buttons have started appearing on Search and Performance Max ads for eligible accounts that were never asked.

01 The evidence

Three websites are speaking for your industry

Ahrefs read 145 million search results and found Google’s discussion box is a near-monopoly.

Ahrefs published an analysis of 145 million United States Google search results on Thursday. The “Discussions and forums” box appeared in 16.93 million of them, 11.7% of the total, and when it appeared, Reddit was inside it 87.8% of the time in the United States and 83.9% worldwide.

Concentration is the finding. Reddit, Facebook and Quora together account for 76.75% of every Discussions and forums link worldwide, and the top ten domains account for 84.87%. Facebook’s 38.3% share comes entirely from posts in public Groups, and it passed Quora for the first time in January.

This is not the transactional end of search, which matters for how you read it. 98.7% of the queries that trigger the feature carry informational intent, and 43.2% of appearances sit on queries of five words or more. That is the “should I hire a lawyer after a rear-end collision” end of the spectrum, not “lawyer near me.”

The result that should move a budget is a null one. Ahrefs found no correlation between backlinks to an individual thread and how often that thread appeared. Among the top 100 URLs in the feature, only six carried any URL Rating at all, and none scored above 5. The average domain age across the top 1,000 sites was 21 years and 8 months, and the youngest was three years and eleven months old.

Read the limits. This is one vendor’s index of one Google feature, and Ahrefs sells the tools that measure it. It also says nothing about whether an AI assistant drew on those threads when it answered a question about your firm. It says only that Google surfaces them, at scale, on exactly the questions people ask before they hire.

What to do about it

Spend an hour reading rather than posting. Find the two or three subreddits where people in your service area describe the problem you solve, and read six months of threads. That is the raw material for the questions your site should answer, and it costs nothing but the hour.

If you decide to participate, participate as a person answering a question. A firm name that a stranger volunteers in a thread carries weight that a firm account cannot buy. Note that several state bars treat a lawyer’s public commentary about their own services as advertising, so run any planned participation past your compliance review before the first post, not after.

02 The platform

Google stopped asking before it opens the answer

The “Show more” button is gone on some queries, and the AI answer arrives at full length.

Google confirmed on Friday that AI Overviews now expand to full length by default on some queries, with the “Ask anything” follow-up box already open. That is the AI Mode experience, delivered without the click that used to be required to get it.

The old behaviour loaded a snippet and a “Show more” button. The new one pushes the ten ordinary results substantially further down the page, on a page most people never scroll to the bottom of. Chris Long spotted it first and Barry Schwartz replicated it.

Google’s statement is short: “For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people.” Robby Stein, Google’s vice president of product for Search, added that the expansion is cancelled if the reader has already started scrolling, so nobody loses their place mid-page.

What Google has not said is which topics qualify or how many queries are affected. There is no published figure for the share of searches involved, and Stein described it as something the team is still testing and tuning. Treat the footprint as unknown rather than small.

For a firm, the practical change is that the distance between the top of a results page and the first organic listing is now variable, set per query by a system you cannot see. A ranking position means less when the page it sits on can grow a thousand words above it.

What to do about it

Take a baseline this week, because a test that changes silently is only measurable against something you recorded first. Run your five highest-intent practice-area questions on a phone, signed out, and note for each one whether the AI answer opened expanded and how far you scrolled before the first ordinary result.

Save the screenshots with the date. If the footprint grows next month, that folder is the only evidence you will have that anything moved.

03 The policy

Google’s spam rules now depend on where you stand

From Sunday, a site reputation penalty stops applying to searchers inside Europe.

Effective August 30, Google will not apply the impact of site reputation abuse manual actions to searchers inside the European Economic Area, following a mandate from the European Commission. Google announced it on the Search Central blog on Thursday.

The policy targets what the industry calls parasite SEO: third-party content published on a host site mainly to borrow the ranking strength that host earned with its own work. Outside the EEA, a manual action still demotes the affected section of the site. Inside it, the penalty has no effect on what searchers see.

The notification does not stop. Sites still receive the manual action in Search Console, can still file a reconsideration request, and eligible sites can bring a dispute to mediation afterward. The algorithmic half of the enforcement survives as well: Google says the affected section “may be separated in our systems so that, over time, it ranks independently from the rest of the site.”

Schwartz, who has covered Google’s spam policies since 2004, called it a first. This is Google applying different spam outcomes based on where the searcher is sitting. A Google spokesperson said the company stands by the policy and remains “concerned about efforts to weaken our spam policies.”

The line that matters to a United States firm is buried in the mechanics. If your practice bought a placement in a national publisher’s “best attorneys in” section, the manual-action risk attached to that page is unchanged for American readers and gone for European ones. Your market is the one where it still bites.

What to do about it

Ask your public relations or placement vendor one question this week: does the page they secured live in a sponsored or contributor subsection of a large publisher, separate from that publisher’s own editorial? If the answer is yes, you are inside the category Google is describing, and the American half of the enforcement is the half you live under.

Whatever you conclude, remember that a paid placement naming your firm is advertising under state bar rules, including the parts about comparative claims and results. Google’s enforcement changing in Europe does not move a single line of your own regulator’s rulebook.

04 The plumbing

The tag counting your leads is being replaced

New Google snippets drop the command a lot of older measurement setups were built around.

Google announced on August 20 that the Google tag and Google Tag Manager are merging. Google tags are being upgraded into fully capable Tag Manager containers, and new deployment snippets will no longer carry the gtag config command. Google recommends configuring initialisation with the gtm init trigger instead.

Nothing is changed automatically. Google says advertisers choose whether to adopt the new configuration, prompted by an optimisation banner in the container, and the in-page behaviour of existing tags is unaffected by the upgrade itself.

The risk is the mixture rather than the migration. A firm whose call and form conversions were wired around a config command years ago, then redeployed later by a different contractor using a current snippet, can end up with initialisation nobody configured and conversions that quietly stop arriving. The gtm init trigger can be set to wait for the config command where a legacy setup needs preserving.

Two other changes ride along. Containers can now send data straight to Google destinations instead of loading gtag.js separately, which Google says removes a source of measurement latency. And linking a container to destination accounts during optimisation grants Read access by default, which is worth knowing before an agency or a vendor appears in your account list.

Google has published no date on which the older snippets stop working, and nothing in the announcement says they will. Read this as a change in what new installations look like, not a deadline.

What to do about it

Before anyone clicks the optimisation banner, have whoever manages your tracking submit a test contact form and a test call, then confirm both land in Google Ads and Analytics as conversions. Do it again the day after any change is published. Conversion tracking fails silently, and the first symptom is usually a bidding strategy quietly starving.

Then open the user list in your Tag Manager container and your Analytics property and read it. If an account gained Read access during an optimisation you did not run, that is a permissions question for your vendor, and for firms handling client enquiry data it is a question your engagement terms probably have an opinion about.

05 The money

A booking button appeared on your ads unasked

Reserve with Google moved onto paid surfaces, and eligible accounts were not consulted first.

The Reserve with Google Book button has expanded from Local Services Ads and Maps onto Google Ads Search and Performance Max campaigns. If your business already published an appointment action link, that link can now power a Book button on your ads with nothing new to build.

The economics come from Google’s own documentation. You pay only for the click on the call-to-action button, whether it reads Book, Reserve or Schedule. The “Appointments booked” conversion goal reaches all eligible accounts with no opt-in required, and Google says you can opt out and disable the feature if you would rather not take part.

Available and active are different states, and the gap between them costs money. The goal does not influence bidding until you add it to a campaign’s settings, which means an account can be showing Book buttons and paying for the clicks while the bidding ignores every booking those clicks produce.

Two limits are worth writing down. Google Ads does not permit booking links or booking goals on healthcare campaigns, so clinics keep the organic Book button only. And the opt-out lives in Google Ads, not the Business Profile, which makes it an advertiser decision that whoever manages your local listings cannot reach.

This is the second move onto booking in a week. Google expanded Local Services Ads booking from about 20 Reserve with Google partners to more than 500 on Tuesday, which we covered on Thursday. The direction is consistent: the appointment is being pulled onto Google’s surface, and the paid version arrived four days after the organic one.

What to do about it

Open the appointment action link for every location you run, this week, and click through it yourself on a phone. An action link published two years ago that lands on a generic homepage used to cost you an organic click. Behind a paid Book button, Performance Max will spend budget driving people to it.

Then decide deliberately whether you want the goal on. If you do, add “Appointments booked” to the campaign settings so the bidding can see it. If you do not, opt out in Google Ads rather than assuming the listing team has it covered.

One more thing for regulated practices: a booking flow that collects a prospective client’s description of their matter is intake, and intake captured through a third-party scheduler carries confidentiality and conflicts obligations that a scheduling vendor’s terms do not resolve for you. Route the flow through your compliance review before you leave it running.

Source Google Ads Help, “About Partner bookings,” documenting the “Appointments booked” conversion goal and its no-opt-in availability, and Search Engine Roundtable, “Google Ads Book Buttons Expand To Search & Performance Max,” by Barry Schwartz, August 28, 2026, reporting findings first published by Michel van Luijtelaar · support.google.com · Secondary: Search Engine Roundtable’s report

If you do one thing this week

Open your own ads first. Look for a Book button you did not add, and if one is there, click the link behind it and see where it lands. That single check takes five minutes and it is the only item today with your money already moving through it.

Then take a baseline you will want in a month. Run five practice-area questions on a phone, signed out, and record whether Google’s AI answer opened at full length and how far down the first ordinary result sat. Save the screenshots with the date on them.

Four of today’s five items changed without anyone asking you. The fifth is the study, and it says the pages answering questions about your field are mostly not yours.
